Cave Paintings with First Grade
First grade kicked off the year by learning about prehistoric art. As a class, we looked at and discussed cave paintings. The students were very eager to observe and investigate different cave paintings from around the world. We talked about the subject matter found in the artworks and how we could incorporate some of the same images into our own creations. After analyzing the cave paintings and discussing why they were created, the first graders understood that people from different places and times have made art for a variety of reasons. We had a lot of fun making our own cave art.

Sketching in Third and Fourth Grade
3rd We have been discussing and exploring sketching in 3rd and 4th grade. We talked about the importance of sketching in art and how we can utilize this skill in other areas of our lives to help better develop our ideas. The students worked to create light sketchy lines focusing on the general shapes of the object before making their way into the details.
|
At the beginning of the project we talked about critiquing. We talked about how we can use critiques during our making process, allowing us to make changes to our ideas and to use this information to strengthen our products.

4th Fourth grade has also been working on their sketching skills. They have been drawing a still life. Each artist's artistic abilities grew during this project. Like with third grade, we also held peer critiques during the making process of our still life drawings. The students used the critiquing process to help improve upon their artwork. These are some of the final results of fourth grade's sketches.
Kindergarten's "City at Night" |
|
The kindergarten classes have been learning about Vincent van Gogh and one of his most famous paintings, Starry Night. After learning a bit of art history, the students created their own modern day versions of Starry Night. We started off by making a skyline of city buildings. Next, we added in swirls, stars and a moon, each created in a similar style seen in van Gogh's painting. Finally, the students painted in their night sky which completed their artwork.

Cubes and Cylinders with Second Grade |
|
The 2nd graders have been trying to master the art of cube and cylinder making. Each student practiced making cubes and cylinders until he or she felt comfortable enough to use them in the creation of a water color painting. The students chose their favorite drink to paint into a glass, which was their cylinder, and added in ice cubes to help cool them down on a hot afternoon in Singapore.

The 5th graders were excited to be learning about value! Value, as an element of art, is the lightness or darkness of a color. We discussed this as a class. We talked about how a light source creates a highlight and a shadow on an object and how we can use value to create the illusion of light in our drawings. Students then practiced creating different values by building up layers of graphite with their pencils. After practicing each student created their own value scale and sphere.

Second Grade SunrisesIn 2nd grade we read the book The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomie dePaola. This story is one of perseverance and endurance. We talked about these character traits and other traits that the main character, Little Gopher, exhibited throughout the story. After reading the story and discussing it, we learned the wet on wet watercolor technique. We talked about how we could use this technique to create a sunset like the one from the story. Each student then received a "white buckskin" like the one Little Gopher used. We then used the wet on wet watercolor technique to paint a sunset onto our buckskin. The 2nd graders ended up with some very beautiful sunsets!

Snowmen with JK
In our JK class, the 4 year olds learned about snow. We talked about making snowmen and the shapes we needed to create a snowman of our own. We decided we needed a big, medium and small circle to make our snowman body before adding in some details. The class started by painting their background blue. After the background dried we added in our circles to make the snowman body. Finally, we gave our snowmen a face, some buttons, and arms. The 4 year olds created some pretty cute snowmen!
Second Grade Painted Pinch Pots
The 2nd graders made pinch pots earlier in the year. Now that the ceramic pinch pots have been fired in the kiln, each student has had the chance to use watercolor paint as a surface decoration for their pot. Each of the pots is unique and very colorful. The students have been excited about finishing these, one of a kind, hand made vessels. Some of the finished products are featured below!

Picasso Portraits with 1st Grade |
|
First grade has been learning about Pablo Picasso. More specifically, the students focused on some of Picasso's portraits for this project. Through observation and investigation, the students prepared to make a portrait of their own. While making their works of art, they explored and used a variety of materials and tools. First grade took care to use their tools and materials both properly and safely while making their masterpieces. The end results were quite good and the students were proud of their Picasso inspired portraits!

Creating with Clay in 4th and 5thFourth and fifth graders have been developing their creativity and skill in clay hand building techniques by making pinch pots and coil built bowls. The students demonstrated craftsmanship while safely exploring the uses of different tools, and while using clay as a medium in art. We talked about creating functional art before the students set out to create their pinch pots and coil built bowls. Hands on experience and direct observation throughout the making process brought about a better understanding of the qualities and characteristics that are unique to clay. The students learned how to properly care for clay, taking it from a wet, malleable state to bone dry and then into a bisque firing. Finally, the students learned proper techniques for glazing and glaze firing. The results were great and the pieces will be on display in the Elementary School Exhibition at ICS's 2016 Fun-fest in April. Make sure to be there to check out all the great ceramic pieces.

3rd Grade Abstract Paintings Inspired by Paul Klee |
|
In third grade, we have been working on abstract paintings inspired by Paul Klee. The students were first introduced to the artist and viewed some of his artwork. Discussion ensued about the elements of art and principles of art that were present in Klee's paintings. The students were encouraged to use some, if not all, of these elements and principles in their own artwork. We talked about some of the inspiration for Klee as he created his artwork. The class listened to jazz music, which they used as inspiration while making their own work. Half way through the creation of their art, students took part in peer assessment to make sure they were incorporating elements of art and principles of art we saw in Klee's artwork. The students worked hard to create their artworks and it paid off.
Kindergarten's Concentric Circles
For this project, students were introduced to the artwork of Wassily Kadinsky. Kadinsky's color study using concentric circles served as the students inspiration. We discussed emotions and how colors can relate to our emotions. Students listened to music and were encouraged to choose their colors according to how the music made them feel. Kindergarten experimented using oil pastels to build their art making skills. As the students created, they communicated verbally an understanding of the process of making their artworks.

Abstract Circles with JK
JK has been busy creating, experimenting and imagining as we journey together through the school year. In this project, students discussed several elements of art, some of the elements included were line, shape and color. Also, a myriad of techniques were discovered, experimented with and used ultimately to create their Abstract Circles. Some of the techniques the students utilized during this project were drawing, using stencils, coloring, collage, painting, stamping, and print making. These guys really enjoyed getting to try out the different techniques and in the end, were proud of their creations.
Collage in 4th and 5th
The 4th and 5th graders learned about collage and used this technique to create original artwork of their own. In 4th grade we examined and discussed the artwork of Romaire Bearden. We then related the narrative's found in Bearden's artwork to narratives we could create in our own artworks that address problems we face in today's society. Students then came up with a sketch and an outline of their idea, brainstorming ways they could convey their message through their artwork. The fourth graders then created by designing and constructing a narrative collage of their own.
The fifth graders examined and discussed Surreal artwork, Surreal Collage in particular. Students took what they had observed and created a sketch in order to devise a plan for the creation of their own, original, surreal collage. During the making of their artworks, the students were encouraged to demonstrate quality craftsmanship in the preparation of their art to be presented. Finally, by writing their own artist statement's for their collage, the students had to justify their choices by explaining the decisions made during their making/creating process.
